When You Are Always Almost Ready to Start

September 22, 2026 · Marianne Skaaland Larsen

When Preparation Never Ends

You just need a better tool, one more course, or a clearer plan. Every preparation seems reasonable, but the project itself keeps moving forward. The difficult part is not that you do nothing. You do a lot that resembles work without risking a visible result.

It may be about procrastination, perfectionist demands, ambiguity, low expectations of mastery, or that the task evokes discomfort. There is no basis to explain all such patterns as a nervous system that has determined that preparation is safe and action is dangerous.

Procrastination is Not One Mechanism

A systematic review and meta-analysis of psychological treatments for procrastination included 12 randomized studies with 718 participants. Overall, the effect was small, and the results varied significantly between studies. A small subset of studies with cognitive behavioral therapy showed a moderate benefit, but the researchers emphasized the limited basis.

A more recent meta-analysis found a moderate correlation between procrastination and negative emotions such as stress, anxiety, and depression. A correlation does not say what came first. Discomfort can make procrastination more likely, while repeated procrastination can create more discomfort.

The source's claim that the brain updates its threat assessment as any action is taken is too absolute. Starting can provide new information and reduce uncertainty, but it can also show that the task needs different frameworks, more competence, or help. Fear does not necessarily disappear after the first step.

Distinguish Useful Preparation from Protective Preparation

Ask what the next preparation is actually supposed to change. If you cannot describe what choice or action it makes possible, it may be a way to postpone judgment.

Try three delimitations:

  1. Define the smallest deliverable that another person can see.
  2. Set a delivery time, not just for more work.
  3. Decide in advance what is "good enough" in the first version.

Make the start reversible. Send a draft to one safe person, create a test page that is not published, or schedule a conversation without committing to the entire course. The goal is to gather information, not to prove that you are brave.

What Do You Expect the Start to Reveal?

The stored expectation may be: "If I start before everything is ready, others will see that I don’t know enough." Then more preparation becomes a protection against shame, not just a work method.

In Harmoni, you can map the trigger, the expectation, and a new, testable outcome: An unfinished first version can provide data without defining your value. If the procrastination leads to significant functional decline or is associated with strong anxiety, depression, or concentration difficulties, professional help may be more relevant than yet another productivity tip.

Also look for real obstacles. Lack of time, money, mandate, or information is not solved by "just starting." A precise next step could just as well be to ask for a decision or to narrow the project.
