When difficult conversations feel like small victories
It’s 4:15 PM. You’re sitting in the car on your way home from work. Your thoughts are racing. You had a difficult conversation with a colleague today, a conversation you would usually do anything to avoid. But this time you stayed. You breathed calmly. Now you’re tired, but also... a little proud?
The silent battle against avoidance
Maybe you can relate? You might feel:
- A constant feeling of balancing on a knife’s edge
- Fear of disappointing others
- An inner critic whispering that you’re not good enough
This pattern can lead you to avoid conflicts and difficult conversations, and instead carry the burden alone. Over time, it drains you of energy and joy. You feel it in your body: stiff shoulders, headaches, a nagging sense of unease.
The Harmoni app as your support
This is where the Harmoni app can be your invaluable support. It can help you turn these patterns around and find the strength to face your challenges.
Awareness
Start by using the Awareness feature in the Harmoni app. After the difficult conversation, take a few minutes for yourself. Go to "Practice" and then "Stress" in the app, and select "Awareness". Reflect on what happened: What triggered your discomfort? What thoughts and feelings arose? The more aware you become of your own reactions, the better equipped you are to handle similar situations in the future. With Harmoni BASIC, you get 5 such exercises a week, while Harmoni PREMIUM offers unlimited access.
StoppStress method
During the conversation, when you feel the discomfort rising, use the StoppStress exercise. You can quickly find it by pressing the SOS button on the Home page, or under "Practice" and "Stress". This method helps you to:
- STOP and register the stress.
- BREATH – take three deep, calm breaths, focusing on a long exhale.
- OBSERVE – notice what’s happening in your body and what thoughts come up.
- PERSPECTIVE – ask yourself: "Is this really that dangerous?".
- CONTINUE – take one step at a time.
This simple exercise can give you the necessary pause to gather your thoughts and respond more appropriately. With Harmoni FREE, you get a limited version of SOS, while Harmoni BASIC provides unlimited access.
Thought patterns
Work on changing limiting thought patterns. Perhaps you often think, "I must always be nice and avoid conflicts". The Harmoni app can help you challenge these thoughts. Go to "Practice" and then "Growth" to find "Thought Patterns". Ask yourself: Is this thought really true? What are the consequences of thinking this way? What other thought can I choose? By consciously changing your thought patterns, you can gradually change your reaction to difficult situations.
Your way forward
What small steps can you take today to challenge your own boundaries and avoid avoidance?
