Why wine can dampen social anxiety right now

September 11, 2026 · Marianne Skaaland Larsen

Before the first glass, you consider every word. Afterwards, you speak more freely and think less about how you come across.

The contrast can be so clear that you think: “This is the real me.”

Alcohol can indeed reduce anxiety in the short term. But the explanation is more complex than just one part of the brain being turned off, and the relief does not mean that alcohol reveals a truer version of you.

Alcohol affects multiple systems simultaneously

GABA is an important inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain, and alcohol can enhance parts of GABA signaling. Alcohol also affects other neurotransmitters and networks. Therefore, the effect cannot be explained as a simple on-and-off mechanism.

In an experiment, 49 healthy social drinkers were given alcohol or a placebo before they viewed emotional faces in an MRI scanner. The alcohol group showed reduced reactivity in parts of the extended amygdala.

The finding is limited. The dose corresponded to about four to five drinks, the participants had no current psychiatric diagnosis, and the task measured responses to images. The study does not show that one glass turns off a “threat scanner,” or that the same effect applies to everyone with social anxiety.

Less self-control is not always more authenticity

When inhibitions are weakened, you may experience less self-monitoring. You may also have poorer judgment, slower reactions, and less precise attention.

The more talkative version of you is therefore not necessarily truer. It is you in a different chemical state.

Still, the difference can provide useful information. What is it that alcohol temporarily makes less important?

The more specific the answer is, the easier it is to find a safer training point.

The relief can become a trap

If alcohol repeatedly becomes the way into social situations, you may learn that you cannot handle them without it. Then you gain fewer experiences of facing the situation sober and discovering that something else can happen.

Over time, tolerance can also develop. When the effect wears off, anxiety, sleep problems, and worry can become more pronounced. Helsenorge lists anxiety as a possible withdrawal symptom and recommends getting help to map drinking patterns if concerned.

Practice on one condition, not the whole gathering

The goal does not have to be to walk into the hardest party and perform without anxiety. Choose one part of the situation:

  1. Agree to stay for 20 minutes.
  2. Have one person you can start a conversation with.
  3. Allow one pause without filling it.
  4. Note what you expected others to think.
  5. Compare the expectation with what actually happened.

In Harmoni, you can work on the trigger point before you reach for the relief: the moment when you expect that you cannot be social without chemical help. The training is not about pushing away the anxiety, but about giving that old expectation a new, sober outcome.

If you drink often, experience withdrawal symptoms, or are unsure if it is safe to reduce, you should contact a doctor. Do not suddenly stop high and prolonged alcohol intake without medical assessment. Helsenorge offers national eTreatment for adults who want to reduce or quit.
